A graceful middle-aged half-elven woman, Elara Mornstar is a retired adventurer who settled in Rookroost sometime during the 560s after her adventuring party disbanded. Already an accomplished pillager of tombs, Elara began to hone the skills needed to perform in an urban environment as soon as she arrived in the city and soon made herself known to the local thieves guild. Shortly thereafter, she was recruited to become a Training Master by the then Guildmaster. As her status within the guild rose, so too did her social standing in the city.
Not content with the role of Training Master, Elara began to dream of being head of the guild for it was one of the most powerful in the Flanaess—rivaled only by guilds in the cities of Greyhawk, Dyvers, and Stoink. Towards this end, Elara developed a strong relationship with the various worshippers of Kurell in the guild, playing upon their feelings of being slighted by the Guildmaster to create a small army of thieves dedicated to her.
In 572 CY, Elara earned the respect of Rookroost’s brotherhood of assassins, the Slayers, when she assassinated the Guildmaster in his sleep. With the assassins and Kurell-worshipping thieves on her side, Elara declared herself Guildmother before anyone could retaliate. Under her reign, the guild grew from a collection of rogues committing petty larceny to a force that ruled Rookroost’s streets—regardless of what Plar Teuod Fent had to say about the situation.
During the late 570s, tensions between the Plar and Elara continued to rise. The Plar, a powerful illusionist in his own right, increasingly began to use magic to pick off more and more of Elara’s supporters (illusions of wealthy merchants led thieves into alleys where the Plar’s soldiers waited, etc.). Elara, determined to do away with the troublesome Plar and rule the entire city, secretly began to cultivate a relationship with the head of the Plar’s army, General Pernevi. In 580 CY, Elara convinced “The General”, as he liked to be known, to assassinate the Plar. With Elara’s assistance, Pernevi attempted to kill the well-guarded and neurotically suspicious Plar. Although the assassination attempt failed, Fent was forced to flee the city and Pernevi declared himself ruler of Rookroost. With the new leader of Rookroost well and truly under her control, Elara was content to remain in the shadows.
All that changed in 583 CY. Before the arrival of Iuz’s army, the cambion shapechanger Kerzinen snuck into the General’s palace and assassinated Pernevi. After assuming his identity, Pernevi/Kerzinen, now calling himself “The Baron”, arranged for the surrender of Rookroost to the Iuzians without even consulting Elara.
Suspicious, Elara confronted The Baron only to realize that someone was impersonating her puppet general. Worried about this new threat, she kept this information to herself as she planned her next step. As the Iuzians began to take control of the city, Elara ordered the guild to lay low so as to avoid any reprisals from the creature impersonating Pernevi.
During this time, Elara used her skills to assume the role of a young human assassin known as “The Eye”. By night, Elara played the role of the young assassin while by day she cultivated a relationship with Lord Marshall Arus Mortoth, a soldier in Iuz’s army who was now head of The Baron’s guards. Because she spent so little time focused on the actual running of the guild, her followers began to grow weary of her rule as they longed to take the fight to the Iuzians.
In 586 CY, after the Flight of Fiends and after having convinced Mortoth that he would make a far better ruler than The Baron, Elara decided that it was time to strike. However, because she had little hope that Mortoth would actually be able to defeat whatever was impersonating Pernevi, and because she wanted to quiet the faction in the guild that wanted her head, she also faked her own death. As far as anyone in the city knew, the young assassin known only as “The Eye” had managed to infiltrate Elara’s grand manor and kill her.
When word spread through the city that Mortoth had assassinated Pernevi, Elara waited impatiently to know the truth of the matter. When Mortoth failed to send her the appropriately worded message that would confirm the death of The Baron, she knew that the attempt had failed and that the creature impersonating Pernevi had killed Mortoth and had assumed his identity. Elara, although angry at the failure, admired the creature’s cunning and power tremendously. As The Eye, Elara slowly ingratiated herself with the creature posing as Mortoth even though she suspected that it knew who she really was.
Elara was correct: Kerzinen did indeed realize that The Eye and the former Guildmother were one in the same. Admiring her raw nerve and venomous disposition, Kerzinen took Elara as a lover. Over pillows, he made it clear to Elara that her role was to keep the Rookroost Thieves Guild from harassing the Iuzian occupiers. Elara, sensing that she was outmaneuvered, agreed.
Late in 593 CY, and much to her surprise, Elara discovered that she was pregnant. Unable to continue her ruse as The Eye, Elara retreated to Kerzinen’s palace for the remainder of her pregnancy. From there, she relayed her instructions to the guild through intermediaries while pretending to be traveling abroad on guild business. During the fall of 594 CY, Elara gave birth to twin cambions, one boy and one girl.
While Kerzinen was interested in raising the offspring, Elara was not and she left the demonlings in the palace under their father’s care and resumed her role as The Eye. Because she was still recovering from the difficult deliveries, she did not attend the Grand Ball of 594 CY. However, word reach her from inside the palace that a group of malcontents had discovered and killed her fiendish children and she vowed never to be put in a position again where children could lead others to her.
During 595 to 596 CY, Rookroost fell into chaos as a new faction emerged in the Rookroost Thieves Guild that began to harass the Iuzians. While Elara maintained her role as The Eye and attempted to keep the guild from attacking the Iuzians, the other faction, lead by Rhaedrick Avenfear, a former member of the guild whom Elara had had driven out of Rookroost in 593 CY for fear of his growing influence, took the fight to the streets. With his return in late 594 CY, fighting amongst the rival factions swept through the city.
In 597 CY, Elara learned that Rhaedrick had discovered her secrets. Realizing that the guild would turn on her when they found out she had been consorting with a demon, she fled to Kerzinen’s palace.
When Rhaedrick confronted Kerzinen in 598 CY, Elara fled the city altogether. Subsequent searches by Rhaedrick and his men have revealed no signs of her and divinations are silent on the topic. Her current whereabouts are unknown but one thing is certain: wherever she is, Elara Mornstar is plotting her revenge.
